The original recipe, which I found in this Williams Sonoma baking book, is for regular orange muffins and uses just the orange zest to flavor the muffins. I found using mandarin oranges instead of regular oranges gave the muffins a delicate, almost floral flavor that I loved.
That being said, you could definitely use regular oranges, clementines, tangerines or some other sweet citrus. You would probably need to add some additional sugar for lemon muffins. Maybe this is something I'll experiment with!
I used Greek yogurt because I love the texture of muffins made with yogurt. The crumb is slightly less dense than my sturdy bakery-style cranberry orange muffins, but still great for a quick breakfast on the go.

I love adding orange zest to baked goods, and I bet the greek yogurt helps keep these muffins moist! Glad to see someone else likes to add a bit of icing to their muffins! I usually do that when I'm making muffins for a special occasion. These look awesome!
I made these muffins and they turned out super good . I did adjust the recipe. I used 1 3/4 flour. I added 1 tsp of cinnamon. I added 1/2 cup of orange juice to the dry cranberries and I put these in a pot on the stove to allow them to warm and plump up. I omitted the milk using the orange juice as a substitute. I baked the muffins for 24 minutes. They were delicious. 10/10
Regular lemon juice and zest can be used in place of the meyer lemon. Also, limes can be used to make lime muffins or oranges to make orange muffins. The orange muffins will be much sweeter, but if you want some tart flavor you can use half orange and half lemon or lime.
